We’re Brian S. Kalata and Rick Shaughnessy. Writers first, always. We’ve spent years telling stories across film, television, documentaries, comics, and the digital frontier. Our work has found its way to festivals, movie theaters, network television, streaming platforms, and everywhere in between.
But this space isn’t about credits. It’s about writing.
This Substack is our creative living room. A place to pull up a chair, pour a cup of coffee, and spend time with stories we’re compelled to tell right now. Like the writers we admire —Joan Didion, Kurt Vonnegut, James Baldwin, John Irving, Hunter S. Thompson, Elmore Leonard, Anthony Bourdain — we believe storytelling is both craft and conversation.
Here, we’ll be experimenting. Short pieces, longer narratives, observations, works-in-progress, fragments that might grow into something else. Some stories may be fictional, some pulled from lived experience, some hovering in between. This is a place for exploration, for play, for risk, without the pressure of algorithms or pitch meetings.
If you love stories, if you’re curious about process, if you believe writing is still one of the best ways we have to understand ourselves and the world around us, you’re home.
